Drones in the electricity sector

In the past, inspections of power lines were carried out manually a time-consuming, and a process that relied on workers to climb and collect visual data. This work is unnecessary and high risk. The work could be hazardous and sometimes carried out in exposure to harsh weather conditions. Manned helicopters were sometimes used, and it too, carried risks for operators and were extremely costly.

Industry estimates suggest that inspecting 500 kilometres of power lines annually could cost hundreds of thousands using a helicopter and a full crew, compared with the cost of using a using drones.


Modern drones are an attractive alternative for power line inspections and have been increasingly deployed worldwide in recent years. UAVs are now considered a key tool for inspection and mapping.  Moreover, it helps provide information for scheduling maintenance of critical infrastructure. 


One of the main advantages of drones in the electricity industry is

workers can remain on the ground while drones equipped with high-tech cameras inspect kilometres of power lines, reducing both working hours, labor costs, and risk to humans.

Intelligent monitoring and detection

High-quality video and images captured by drones allow operators to detect rust and other forms of corrosion on lines and towers. They also support the monitoring of vegetation near these installations, helping to determine whether pruning is needed to prevent interference with electricity supply. Even bird nests can be identified.


Sensors that anticipate hazards

Drones fitted with temperature sensors can instantly detect anomalies through real-time readings, reducing the risk of fires. Those equipped with advanced sensors and artificial intelligence capabilities can recognize objects and potential hazards along power lines, helping to prevent collisions or other incidents that could impact operations.
